Sustainability at UF can be traced to “a grassroots movement of students, faculty and staff from a variety of academic and administrative units.” This movement gained momentum when in 1990 President John Lombardi signed the Tallories Declaration, promising to make environmental education and research a central goal in this institution.
The purpose of the movement was to increase environmental literacy on campus, examine current practices to reduce environmental impact, and create a culture of environmental stewardship.
The University of Florida’s purchasing directives support the purchase of commodities and services that will minimize any negative environmental impacts of its work.
UF Procurement Services is proud to have won awards tied to sustainability efforts, including the following:
- 2017 GROW Gold Level Certification from the UF Office of Sustainability
Procurement Services as an office has implemented greener practices, working toward a more sustainable future. - 2011 Sustainable Solutions Awards for Waste Reduction
The Procurement Services Construction Team implemented a number of changes to their Bid Packages work procedures which have significantly reduced waste, helping UF get closer to its goal of zero waste. - First Place, Campus-wide Second Annual Carbon Diet Contest, 2003
This diet was designed to protect the environment, save money, and enhance the quality of the campus and community.
WE CAN ALL WORK TOWARD A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR US AND THE GENERATIONS TO COME.
